Gas oven igniters in St. Louis Park: a glow is not enough

An oven that glows orange but never lights, or takes several minutes to catch, usually has a weak igniter. In St. Louis Park we measure the igniter’s current draw before replacing anything, because the glow alone proves little.

Oven igniter

How a glow-bar oven igniter lights the burner

Most gas ovens built in recent decades light with a hot surface igniter, often called a glow bar. It is a small strip of silicon carbide or silicon nitride mounted next to the bake burner, and it is wired in series with the oven safety valve. When you set a bake temperature, current flows through the igniter and it heats until it glows orange. As it heats, its resistance drops and more current flows through the circuit. The safety valve contains a small bimetal heater that opens the valve only when that current reaches its rated level. Gas then flows to the burner, the glowing igniter lights it, and the control cycles the igniter and valve together to hold the temperature you set.

That series arrangement explains the classic failure. As an igniter ages, its resistance creeps up, so it still glows but passes less current than the valve needs. The oven sits with a bright igniter and no flame, or it lights only after several minutes, sometimes with a soft boom as gas finally catches. Igniters also crack from heat cycling, from being bumped during cleaning or from spills that land on them hot, and a cracked one may not glow at all. Self-cleaning cycles are hard on them because of the long, intense heat. Less often the safety valve itself fails, or the control stops sending power, so the current reading has to come before a new igniter goes in.

Signs

Signs of a weak oven igniter

  • The igniter glows orange through the oven floor slots, but the burner never lights.
  • The oven takes several minutes to light and preheats far slower than it used to.
  • A soft boom or puff when the burner finally lights after a long delay.
  • A faint gas odor at ignition that lingers longer than it once did.
  • The cooktop burners light normally, yet the oven stays cold at every setting.
  • The broiler lights but the bake burner does not, or the other way around.

Where we find it

Where we replace oven igniters

Machine or model typeWhat we see with this part there
Standard gas rangesBake igniter under the oven floor; weak glow bars are the usual call.
Gas ranges with top broil burnersSeparate bake and broil igniters; one can weaken while the other works.
Self-cleaning gas ovensLong clean cycles crack aging igniters; failures often follow a clean.
Gas wall ovensIgniter reached from inside the cavity; slow light-offs are the common complaint.

How we test it

How we test an oven igniter

  1. 1

    Watch the light-off

The technician sets a bake temperature and times how long the igniter glows before the flame appears, watching through the floor slots. A long wait before flame, or a glow with no flame at all, points toward a weak igniter or a valve problem.

  2. 2

    Measure current draw

With an ammeter clamped on the igniter circuit, the technician reads the current while it glows. If the reading falls short of what the safety valve needs, the igniter is weak even though it looks bright. A glow alone can never provide this measurement.

  3. 3

    Check the safety valve

If the igniter pulls enough current and the burner still stays dark, the meter goes across the safety valve terminals with power off. An open valve heater means the valve is at fault. The technician also confirms the control is sending line voltage to the circuit.

  4. 4

    Confirm safe ignition

After repair, the oven lights several times in a row while the technician times each ignition, checks the flame shape at the burner and tests the gas connections with leak detector solution. The oven then holds a set temperature through a full cycle.

Minnesota angle

Oven igniters through a St. Louis Park winter

Plenty of St. Louis Park kitchens cook with natural gas, especially in the 1950s ramblers and Cape Cods around Westwood Hills, Aquila and Sorensen. Those ovens work hardest from Thanksgiving through the holiday baking weeks, which is exactly when a tired igniter tends to quit, and a cold kitchen in January is a poor time to be without one. Long winter roasts and the self-clean cycle many owners run before guests arrive add heat stress the igniter remembers. Water hardness plays no part in this story; the questions are current, gas and heat. Newer condos near Excelsior and Grand often have electric or dual-fuel ranges instead, with no oven igniter at all.

Questions

Oven igniter questions

My oven igniter glows, so how can it be bad?

The glow shows only that the igniter is hot. The gas valve opens on current, not on color, and an aging igniter can look bright while passing too little current to open it. That is why we clamp a meter on the circuit instead of judging by eye, and it is one of the oven repairs we make most often.

What should I do if I smell gas near the oven?

A brief, faint odor at ignition can happen with a slow igniter. A strong or lasting gas smell is different: do not touch light switches or the oven, leave the house and call your gas utility’s emergency line from outside. Once the home is declared safe, we can diagnose the oven itself.

Can I replace an oven igniter myself?

We recommend against it. The work involves the gas burner, the safety valve, live electrical connections and a leak check afterward. The safe owner steps are confirming the range is plugged in, that the cooktop burners light, and that the oven is not set to a delay-start, Sabbath or lockout mode.

How soon can you replace an oven igniter in St. Louis Park?

Ovens are typically on the schedule within the same week and often the next day, with a two-hour arrival window confirmed by text. We carry the common glow-bar igniters, so the visit usually ends with a working oven and a written warranty. Saturday appointments are available too.

Does the cooktop use the same igniter as the oven?

No. The cooktop uses spark electrodes and a spark module that click until the burner lights. Most gas ovens use a hot surface igniter that glows instead of clicking. A range can have a healthy cooktop and a failed oven igniter, or the reverse, so each is tested on its own.
