Ovens, ranges & cooktops

Ovens and ranges in St. Louis Park, Edina and southwest Minneapolis

The range in a west metro kitchen usually tells you when that kitchen was last redone. Many St. Louis Park ramblers off Cedar Lake Road and Louisiana Avenue still keep the range in the same slot it held in the 1950s, and the gas or electric hookup behind it decides what goes there. Edina rebuilds around the Country Club District, Interlachen and Parkwood Knolls trade that slot for wall ovens stacked in tall cabinets, dual-fuel ranges with gas burners over an electric oven, and induction or glass-top cooktops set into islands. Southwest Minneapolis is a mix, with tight remodeled kitchens in Kenwood and Lynnhurst that often hold a slide-in range. Built-ins raise access questions, since a wall oven sometimes has to come partly out of its cabinet, and the technician plans for that before arriving.

Most oven calls start with heat. A gas oven’s glow-bar igniter fades over the years: it keeps lighting up orange, but its current draw slides until the safety valve refuses to open, and the burner stays dark. On electric ovens a bake element blisters or splits, often with a bright flash during preheat. Cooktop calls are usually a burner switch, a spark module that keeps clicking after a spill, or a glass-top element that stays on high. A typical call: a dual-fuel range in a Minnetonka split-level where the gas burners work but the electric oven barely warms. The technician meters the bake and broil elements, finds the bake element open, checks the temperature sensor, and writes one price before replacing the element from the truck.

What we see

Oven, range and cooktop symptoms

  1. Gas oven will not light

Most often the igniter has aged: it still glows, yet it lacks the pull to open the safety valve. Less often the valve or a control is at fault. We measure the igniter’s current draw with a meter rather than judging it by its color, then replace the part that tests low and confirm the burner lights on every try.

  2. Electric oven not heating

One of the elements has opened, often with a blister or split you can see along the loop, or the control board’s bake relay no longer clicks closed. We read resistance on each element and check the voltage reaching it, then tell you in everyday terms which piece quit before writing the price.

  3. Temperature off or slow preheat

Common culprits are a temperature probe reading off from the true heat, a tired igniter on gas models, and a gasket that leaks heat around the door. We compare the sensor reading against its specification, check the gasket and hinges, and test the heat source so recipe times make sense again.

  4. Burner keeps clicking

On a gas cooktop, a spill or trapped moisture under the cap, or a spark switch that has started to fail, keeps the igniter clicking after the flame lights. We dry and clean the burner base, test the switches and the spark module, and replace only the piece that stays faulty.

  5. Glass-top burner stuck on high

Usually an infinite switch with welded contacts, so the element glows at full power whatever the knob says. A cracked element or a damaged surface can also be involved. Both the switch and the element get metered, and if the glass itself turns out to be the problem, we say so directly.

  6. Wall oven display or controls dead

A summer storm or a power blink can take out a control board, a fuse on the board, or a thermal cutoff above the oven. We check incoming power at the oven first, then the cutoff and the board, so a simple fuse is not mistaken for a whole new control.

Brands and models

Range and oven brands in local kitchens

Standard gas and electric ranges fill the post-war kitchens of Richfield, Crystal and New Hope, usually a GE, Whirlpool, Frigidaire or Kenmore. Slide-in ranges from LG, Samsung and Bosch are common in Minneapolis remodels. Edina and Wayzata rebuilds lean toward double wall ovens, dual-fuel ranges, induction cooktops and Café or KitchenAid pieces built into the cabinetry. We also service Electrolux, Maytag and Amana ovens, plus glass-top and coil-element electric models from every brand we cover.

These are the oven and range parts we carry on the truck, covering most gas and electric oven repair in St. Louis Park and Edina kitchens.

Cities

Oven repair calls around the west metro

From St. Louis Park we handle oven and range repair in Minneapolis, Edina, Wayzata, Richfield, Golden Valley and Plymouth. Richfield’s compact kitchens hold standard ranges in tight spaces near Penn and Lyndale. In Golden Valley mid-century houses, the cooktop often sits in its own counter cutout with the oven built into a wall nearby. Plymouth builder homes usually set a gas cooktop or range along a long counter run. Wayzata lake homes mix large dual-fuel ranges with townhome kitchens on electric.

Questions

Oven or range repair questions

Do you repair gas ranges and ovens?

Yes, gas and electric both. On gas models we work on the parts inside the appliance, such as igniters, safety valves, spark switches, spark modules and controls. We do not run or alter the gas piping in the house. A gas smell in the kitchen is a call for the gas utility’s emergency line, made from outside the home, before any repair visit.

How does the $99 oven diagnostic work?

The technician runs the bake and broil cycles, measures igniter current or element resistance, checks the temperature sensor and reads any error code. Then you are told, without jargon, which part gave out, and you receive a single written price. Going ahead means the $99 lives inside that price; passing means you hand over $99 for the testing and we leave the oven as it was.

Is a wall oven in an Edina remodel something you service?

Yes. Single and double wall ovens from GE, Café, KitchenAid, Whirlpool, Bosch and Electrolux come up often in Edina and Wayzata rebuilds. Some repairs require easing the oven partway out of its cabinet, so we plan for the weight and protect the trim. When booking, give us the model number and say whether the oven is a single or a double.

A glass-top element glows and the knob will not turn it off. Now what?

First try the knob once more. If the element keeps glowing, flip the range’s breaker to off and leave it there, and do not cook on that range in the meantime. The pattern almost always points to a failed infinite switch, which we test and usually replace from the truck during that first visit.

Is induction something you work on?

We do diagnose and repair induction cooktops from the brands we service. Typical faults are a cooling fan that has stopped, a failed power board, or a sensor that no longer recognizes a pan. Some induction parts must come by order, and fitting them on a second visit adds no trip charge, and your written warranty appears on the invoice.

How quickly can you see an oven in Richfield before a holiday?

Most oven and range calls in Richfield and the rest of the area are scheduled within the week, often for the next day, and Saturday visits are available. Book as soon as the oven acts up rather than waiting for the holiday week. A text confirms your two-hour arrival window, which lets you schedule the baking around it.
